Summary

The Current Population Survey (CPS) Veterans Supplement is a biennial supplement sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that collects information on the labor force status of veterans. The supplement provides data on veterans with service-connected disabilities, combat veterans, past or present National Guard and Reserve members, recently discharged veterans, and veterans who served in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Vietnam, as well as their participation in transition, employment, and training programs.

A new BLS Commissioner has been confirmed but many leadership roles remain vacant, and reductions in staffing have affected the ability to maintain core data collections. Prior to the shutdown, hiring had resumed to augment CPI data collection. From FY2024 to FY2026, the Census Bureau has lost more than 2,500 staff (approximately 20%).
