Back to all collections

Summary

The Current Population Survey (CPS) Displaced Worker, Employee Tenure, and Occupational Mobility Supplement is conducted periodically and provides data on workers who lost a job during the previous three years due to plant closings, shift eliminations, insufficient work, or other work-related reasons. It also collects information on employee tenure with a worker's current employer and occupation, as well as occupational mobility, supporting analyses of job displacement, workforce stability, and labor market transitions in the United States.

Statutory Context

High Risk
Statutory authorization is vague.

Staffing and Funding

Moderate Risk
A new BLS Commissioner has been confirmed but many leadership roles remain vacant, and reductions in staffing have affected the ability to maintain core data collections. Prior to the shutdown, hiring had resumed to augment CPI data collection. From FY2024 to FY2026, the Census Bureau has lost more than 2,500 staff (approximately 20%).
